Great post! Thank you for schooling a lot of elder millennials. I love how you always frame your fashion advice with "you do you" as the ultimate guide. I can't get rid of my no-show's but I do have some quarter socks that I am enjoying playing around with!
Grace preaches that mentality and I think it is the best way to live! I see inspiration everywhere, but ultimately am going to wear what feels the most me.
As an 'elder millennial,' I am not ready to give up my no-shows with sneakers...BUT, I have started wearing fun, bright colored ones that are "almost no-show" with just a little poking out of the top. Baby steps?? :) With other shoes though, I am ALL IN for a fun pop of color like the cobalt ones Abby wears in the first pic -- Love that look! *adds bright blue trouser socks to wishlist*
I went into this thinking i was absolutely a firm no on socks with various non-athletic shoes but dang if the last two photos didn’t inspire me and make me reconsider my position. Thanks for sharing this!
Carly, thank you for this desperately needed sock tutorial! My no shows were so sad looking but I wasn’t sure where to start with a refresh. This is perfect!
YES YES YES YES YES YES. I love that you are showcasing Carly. That alone is so cool and inspiring and what I wish for this place to BE. And then I love Carly! She is tender and smart and informative. I immediately subscribed and also found all these new people through her. I believe crossing generations and taking risks and supporting each other makes us all the best of what it means to be "young" -- and that is open, seeing possibilities, and unweighed down by yucky weird stuff, just soaringggggg. Yay CARLY!! And would love a post on how to choose a cool sneaker from an actual sneaker place, vs my Miu Mius. XOXOXO
I really enjoyed your post about socks, Carly. I love socks! And I feel sorry for them as well. I write and illustrate books about the many trials and tribulations of the Odd Socks, who desert their partners, and are never seen again. All socks have one aim in common, and that is to avoid being found and worn on the dreaded Human Feet! When you can't find that matching sock, now you will know why! www.michellecaines.co.uk
I’m Gen X and I’m like no more no-shows? I don’t know 🤔 I’m wondering how this style translates when you’re a bit older. I feel like I’m always walking the line between dipping my toe into trends, and not looking like I’m trying to look young when I’m not.
There's never any harm in dipping your toes! We all start somewhere, and there is nothing more rewarding than some self-exploration of style. Start at a place where you feel most comfortable!
I'm not sure where on the GenX timeline you're from, but we've got this! We had ankle socks with heels and skirts in the Madonna Like a Virgin era. We had those thick Wigwam socks pulled up over our leggings & jeans. I know I went through a penny loafer with socks and rolled jeans phase as well. I'll stay away from the ones that look like the knee-high stockings my mom & grandmoms wore then, but I think we can start with some chunky colorful socks underneath wide legged jeans..
Lol you are so right. We started this trend! I think that’s the weird thing about getting older; you see all these trends that look dated because we did them years ago, but also new because they’re being reimagined in current ways by young people
Thank you so much for this!! Wondering…can we do a sneaker companion substack post? Context: I’m spending a few days in NYC after living in CA for the last 5 years. And literally EVERYONE is wearing sneakers all the time. Sneakers with dresses, skirts, trousers, etc. I love the comfort of this but feel there’s an art to choosing the right sneaker for each outfit? Just a thought!
I’m not on Instagram but if I was I would post a photo of me wearing socks for the first time in a long time to work, j crew black with polka dots, and tag Carly and Grace :) thanks for the encouragement and inspiration!!

Baby steps! Abby inspired all of us, cobalt blue may be my new favorite color.
I did the same thing!!!! I love her cobalt socks!
Elder millennial here too….I finally ordered quarter socks…. thank you, Carly!
Quarter socks are the perfect start!
What is an elder millennial?? I'm 72 I guess that puts me in a boomer crone category? 🤷🏼♀️😅

This is so sweet Michelle - I love that everyone's got socks on their mind!
And on their feet - unfortunately for the socks! 😂
Loved this! Carly, thanks for bringing us an easy way to lean into a new-er trend. You just might have convinced me to toss my no show socks…
I love that I may have convinced you! If Grace can toss them aside, you definitely can too!
Great post, loved reading it ! Carly did a great job!
Thank you, Rebecca! So glad you enjoyed reading it!

I'm 72 and I love and I've used quirky socks forever.
That’s awesome!
I'm gonna play with socks next week for a business trip in Seattle. My skirts and dresses are knee length ish what would Carly recommend?
