Bird by Bird is so great! I’m not sure it taught me all that much about writing but she is hilarious. I also love On Writing by Stephen King.
Can we bring back books under 200 pages!? I just read Heartburn by Nora Ephron for the first time and it was so great and only 180ish pages. Everything is so long these days.
Love classic films - the obvious include Casablanca and Singin' in the Rain but some other favorites include Charade, My Man Godfrey, The Awful Truth, The Philadelphia Story, Notorious, His Girl Friday, Top Hat, Shall We Dance, and It Happened One Night (I like Cary Grant and screwball comedies lol).
Yes I second His Girl Friday, the Philadelphia Story, Charade, It Happened One Night! Anything screwball really. Some Like it Hot, How to marry a millionaire, to have and have not and To Catch a Thief are fun too. Carmen Jones is less fun but gorgeous costumes and Dandridge/Belafonte 🥵
I love the quote you shared so much, Grace. I definitely have very different style from you and a very different body shape, but I do enjoy your posts so much anyway. Your energy is so positive that I feel good after reading anything that you share. Just wanted you to know that. :)
As a fellow big "back to school, new year, new me" person, thanks for sharing your goals. I found it inspiring, as a few that are not that different from my own for this fall. (I also appreciate the more vulnerable goals, they aren't always easy to share!)
Another vote for On Writing. Your Story by Joanne Fedler is another good one, though it's memoir-focused.
For writing, I really enjoyed Haruki Murakami's What I Talk About When I Talk About Running -- it's like narrative non-fiction that is more inspiration than technical. I'm currently working through Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way to help with building creative structure into my writing. So enjoying reading about this part of your work, Grace!
I love the BA focaccia and it's truly so easy and hard to mess up! They also had a forum going when the recipe was published to help answer any questions.
If you would like to try a great focaccia bread recipe try the one from the website alexandracooks.com. She has two cookbooks out. It is easy and delicious. You don’t use a Dutch oven (that’s for sourdough) but a 9 x 13 pan. I top with thinly sliced cherry tomatoes, onion and flaky sea salt.

Second Stephen King's 'On Writing'!
On Writing is in my pile, so glad to know it's good! And agree re: under 200 page books! We need more.

Cary Grant comedies are THE BEST. My favorite is His Girl Friday.
I love him so much!

seconding this recipe! it’s my fave. and adding that if you want to bake an easy loaf in a Dutch oven, the NYT no knead bread is pretty easy: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/11376-no-knead-bread?ds_c=71700000052595478&site=google&network=g&campaign_id=1400169272&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADwd30iQBPOFvK-uRUIz54ESWsCUr&gclsrc=ds
thank you!
Thank you!!!!!
The Philadelphia Story is my absolute favorite old movie - a star studded cast and a sweet story!
OMG same - and High Society too!
I love the quote you shared so much, Grace. I definitely have very different style from you and a very different body shape, but I do enjoy your posts so much anyway. Your energy is so positive that I feel good after reading anything that you share. Just wanted you to know that. :)
That makes me feel so good. Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a great weekend!
I'm a big cinephile, so I love nothing more than recommending films! Some of my favorite classics from the 40s:
-Double Indemnity
-The Red Shoes
-Brief Encounter
-Rebecca
-Adam's Rib
-The Best Years of Our Lives
-The Third Man
-Black Narcissus
-A Matter of Life and Death
-To Be or Not to Be
-The Lady Eve
I'll stop there for now :)
Ooh thank you! I LOVED Double Indemnity and Rebecca, adding the rest to my list!
Keep us updated on the writing stuff!! This is really interesting to me as I’m always trying to improve my writing but I don’t write fiction.
I will!!!! x
Foccacia is a great starter bread to make! I love this recipe because it doesn’t require a long proofing time, and I just use a rimmed baking sheet!
thank you!
Classic movie: Charade
Romance famous/not famous: Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfield
Romantic comedy is one I loved so much that I immediately listened to the audio after I finished reading it. I just wanted to stay in the world!
it was a great book!
Adding Charade to my list! I read Romantic Comedy and really enjoyed it.
This elder millennial is ready for socks school 😂
